Zoysia Grass

by: Nolan Berg

Introduction

Zoysia grass is originally from Southeast Asia, China and Japan. It is a low growing creeping grass that is slow to establish its self, but very aggressive once it is established. It is very heat resistant, wiry, and can be uncomfortable on

bare feet. Zoysia grass is very wear tolerant and can be used for athletic fields, golf courses, parks, and other high wear areas. It has good shade tolerance in the South, but needs more sun in the Northern areas. Zoysia cuts the costs of

mowing because it is slow growing, and also cuts the costs of fertilizers and herbicides because it is a thick growing grass that prevents diseases. Zoysiagrass is not suitable for establishing in Minnesota or North Dakota because it is a

warm season grass. The grass will turn brown early in the fall, and will take a long time to get fully recovered in the spring.

Characteristics

Zoysia grass is a warm season grass that can grow further North than many other warm season grasses.

Grows well in all types of souls ranging from sands to clays.

Must be propagated with plugs or sod because seeds are to hard to harvest.

Once established it is a very thick dense turf, providing weed control.

Very deep rootings that allow the grass to survive in very dry conditions.
